Again, it goes to show us that you need to stick to your principles and not accept something at face value. In what some would describe as a male dominant environment, (mentioned in the article), this woman pushed forward and changed the course of history. Bravo, very well done!!!

I had not heard of her but thank goodness for her persistence, what a strong amazing woman to stand up for her principles and those who challenged her.

The aforementioned "liquid sulfa drug" did indeed cause the deaths of many people, but it was taken off the market on a technicality; it was labelled as an ELIXIR, which is an alcoholic or hydroalcoholic mixture of a drug, and it had NO alcohol in it. Instead, it contained diethylene glycol (DEG) as an excipient, which caused the fatalities. And as for the many claims that the FDA drags its feet on approving new drugs, the FDA justifies this with one word--THALIDOMIDE. Dr. Kelsey is a remarkable woman, and is deserving of the praise she has more than earned.

I’m in the Pharma industry and thank heavens for good reviewers. Transparency is vital in our industry that has data shrouded in secrecy (otherwise).

I knew a thalidomide baby. In spite of having no hands, only one arm, he made a success of his life. But , he did not need to be that wat. A pharmaceutical company’s greed made his life more difficult. I live in Canada

1961 – Australian doctor William McBride wrote to leading medical journal, the Lancet, after noticing an increase in deformed babies being born at his hospital – all to mothers who had taken thalidomide. The drug was withdrawn later that year.
